on 2nd of june at the gorki leninskie state museum, with the support of the federal agency for culture and cinematography, the new museums - new worlds international conference took place.
the idea of organizing the forum was expressed by the ceo of marka:ff company, fedor pavlov-andreevich during a discussion with lord foster and the director of the london royal academy of arts, norman rosenthal over dinner in london. subsequently the marka:ff team successfully brought the idea to life.
the role of patron of the conference was fulfilled by shlava chigirinsky, general director of st development, which is the developer of two reconstruction projects: the zaryadye in moscow and new holland in st. petersburg, which will include more than 100,000 sq.m. of space allocated to exhibition, theatre and concert halls. the architect for both projects, lord norman foster, personally presented the projects, which will become a cultural focus for russian citizens and an intellectual magnet for tourists from all over the world.
the conference was opened by the head of the federal agency for culture and cinematography, mikhail shvydkoy, who noted that only now society has fully acknowledged the necessity for interaction between culture and business, and that five years ago the existence of such a forum would have been impossible.
the themes of what a museum should be like in the 21st century, issues related to the formation of a new unified global cultural space and methods of financing projects in the cultural sphere were discussed by heads of the world’s leading museums and cultural institutions, the most significant patrons of the arts and collectors, as well as leading russian and western curators and artists, including the director of the hermitage museum, mikhail piotrovsky; director of the pushkin state museum, irina antonova; general director of the moscow kremlin museum, elena gagarina; collector and chairman of the board of directors of rigroup, janna bullock; director of the multimedia art center, olga sviblova; director of the schusev state museum of architecture, david sarkisian; curator of the guggenheim museum and head art consultant to miuccia prada, germano celant; curator in charge of the metropolitan museum, gary tinterow; director of the serpentine gallery, julia peyton-jones; new york gallery owner, jeffrey deitch; leading british sculptor, antony gormley; creative director of the shanghai museum of contemporary art, victoria lu; director of the national museum of singapore, lee chor lin; director of the london outset foundation, yana peel; chairman of the phillips de pury auction house, simon de pury; head of the london foundation luxembourg art, daniella luxembourg; and many more.
the conference participants expressed the desire to continue to participate in the formation of a program of development and a thematic plan of the repertoire of the future art space, which will unite moscow and st. petersburg into a unified cultural sphere and become a global first-of-its-kind cultural space in russia, which will be transformed from a passive depository of the past into an active element of social life, a catalyst for changes in the global artistic process. the participants agreed to meet again in russia in a year’s time.
at 16.30 on 3rd of june in the library hall of the baltchug kempinski hotel, a press briefing took place on the results of the conference with the participation of the exhibitions secretary of the london royal academy of arts, norman rosenthal, the general director of st development, shalva chigirinsky and a ceo of marka ff company, fedor pavlov-andreevich.
also on 3rd of june the conference participants visited moscow’s leading art spaces: the newly opened contemporary art museum of igor markin, art4; the museums of the moscow kremlin (where the deputy director of museums herself, well-known curator zelfira tregulova, led an excursion); and the winzavod contemporary art center (where the heads of the center, roman and sophia trotsenko, showed the guests around the best galleries of moscow).
